Quitman, AR
The small city of Quitman, AR, stretches across Cleburne and Faulkner counties, located less than 25 miles northeast of Conway. Quitman covers a total land area of just two square miles along Arkansas Highway 25 at the junctions of Highways 124 and 356, home to roughly 800 people.
Settlers began arriving in the area in 1840, and Methodists played an important role in the community’s early years. Major development did not begin until after the Civil War, when the town was officially laid out in 1868. Quitman was incorporated in 1881, already known as the “Athens of Arkansas” for its local educational opportunities. Today, Quitman is home to more than 100 registered businesses, while providing a rural lifestyle for many residents who commute to jobs in Conway.
